Topic: Canadian Player Rankings in Canada

Author: Will Original Message Posted: Sep 24 2009 1:51PM

The following is a list of players ranks for Canadian Nationals. Please feel free to ask me any questions about the rankings, but if you need to dispute your rank please email me at will_stranks@hotmail.com.

I did not personally come up with any players ranks. I sent a list of players to 8 or 9 respected foosball players from across the country. All of those players put in a vote and then I averaged them to get the ranks I have below. They are based on results in the past and recently.

If you think you should be ranked higher or lower, send me a list of results that you have had and results that other players of the rank have had and show me why you should be lower or higher. If it makes sense I will move you. That said it would need to be a pretty compelling arguement to change where you are ranked.

If your name is not on this list and you plan on attending the tournament let me know. I tried to cover everyone.

In doubles, teams will be ranked according to the higher ranked player. The lower ranked player can pay the lower entry fee but the team will be seeded by the higher ranked players rank.

Author: The Next One. Reply #2 Posted: Sep 24 2009 2:41PM

This is a crock, who the heke rated me a pro?

I should be an amature for this tournament!!

Author: Nelson Reply #3 Posted: Sep 24 2009 2:47PM

I'm not on the list.

Author: The Next One. Reply #4 Posted: Sep 24 2009 2:50PM

You're an am too

Author: Red Pepper Reply #5 Posted: Sep 24 2009 3:44PM

This list is what I would call....hilarious.

This list is what I would call....alphabetical.

Could you give an explanation as to why a former Tornado World Champion would be Pro instead of Pro Master?

I've played Moya Tielens before, she is extremely good.

Author: The Next One. Reply #9 Posted: Sep 24 2009 4:25PM

i'd say the list is pretty accurate sept for goodman, nhu tran, and myself, AM

Author: Aged Whine & Cheese Reply #10 Posted: Sep 24 2009 6:25PM

I figured Moya had been left off the list. Unless her game has gone to crap of late, I think she should be a master. My game has gone to crap of late so I'll gladly accept Pro.

Dave, sorry man, but you should be pro. I think that is accurate given the other players in that list.

Of course, now that I've been ranked the same as Simon Edwards, I think I have to retire.

Author: moyatielens Reply #11 Posted: Sep 24 2009 6:30PM

Dave, shut it..you should be Pro for sure, compared to the rest of the list.

Author: Will Reply #12 Posted: Sep 24 2009 6:31PM

Nhu tran is a pro. Thx for noticing that one for me.

Nelson I will get you ranked right away, can some people email me what Nelson should be ranked compared with the list above.

Eric g is ranked pro master because of his recent results. If he fails drastically he can be moved down. Based on rankings submitted he was in the same group as other players on that list. Eric g, if you want to dispute your rank email me your reasons.

Moya is a pm in womens events but is a pro for mens events, other womens ranks will change for there events also. She might get bumped to pm if she wins(I don't think she is coming though).

Thanks for the responses. I want the list to be as accurate as possible.

Obviously there is rookies bumped to semi, semi's bumped to pro, and pro's bumped to master. This is better for true rookies that have never played tournament foos before. What newbie wants to lose to a guy that has a 5 bar and a roller but calls himself a rookie.

Keep in mind at this event every rank gets to play the same amount of games. It's pretty fair regarless of your rank.

Author: Red Pepper Reply #13 Posted: Sep 24 2009 7:46PM

Recent results must have a staggering amount of strength.

No kidding or insulting intended. But having Eric Goodman ranked higher then the only woman in history to win Open Mixed as a forward is *bleep*ing disgrace.

Wait - does *bleep*ing get edited out? F--King. Yea, there, just in case, nobody got that.

Are we Candians becoming that egocentric? I almost want to move to the states.

Author: .Garry Reply #14 Posted: Sep 24 2009 7:59PM

I do believe that recent results do have a large part to do with the rankings. Eric has had some great results over the last couple years and Moya-who has admitted not coming- has played very little, and when she has played has not had near the results that she was posting prior to her "layoff".

Lets make an argument for other players that are not coming as well...lol

I believe Eric G does belong in the group he is in- and Moya, if she were coming would be a force regardless of her ranking. The rankings only determine entry fees and seedings for the first group.

Author: Will Reply #15 Posted: Sep 24 2009 8:59PM

Recent results do matter a lot. I'm not sure that it is strange to count recent results more than old results. I would rather move more players up than players down. Eric g has had very good results recently at multiple tournaments in several events - including open singlesat worlds. He has proved how good he is and more people agree than disagree out of all the people I asked.

I will probably make a few more revisions to the ranks - more people will move up before people will be moving down.

Author: .Garry Reply #16 Posted: Sep 24 2009 10:07PM

I don't believe that anyone who shoots backpins should be ranked a pro... I vote to move myself down!

Author: The Next One. Reply #17 Posted: Sep 24 2009 11:20PM

If goodman is a pm than we should add another 10 players to be pm's

Author: S. Edwards Reply #18 Posted: Sep 24 2009 11:21PM

Remember a PM pays 200 to play singles and doubles and the pro pays 120.

Author: .Garry Reply #19 Posted: Sep 25 2009 12:01AM

I vote Dave Ahn to be a PM.

When Will asked me to be one of the people to give my input on rankings, I agreed but knew there would be people upset about their rankings- but more because they were over-ranked.

Let this not be a thread that starts to take shots at specific players. Why someone would care that someone else has to pay more than them to play the same events is weird-especially if they think they are of equal caliber as that player.

Author: The Next One. Reply #20 Posted: Sep 25 2009 12:22AM

Won't be there this year, but I'm betting all yous are gonna see what I mean when the BC players go down. Just calling it how I see it. I've played with Eric vs Adrian and Tom at the worlds and against him at the qualifier. He's a good player, but there are about 6 players in Vancouver that I feel are at least as good.

Sorry Eric, not trying to put you down, its more so to put other players i know up.

David Ahn.

Author: University of Foos Reply #21 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:03AM

Dave and others,

No offense taken, honestly I thought I played awful at worlds, I wish that I had made a different showing, it would have made this bump in rank more deserving.
I suppose I understand the bump in rank based on my results (most recent worlds excluded) though. Who knows, if i got ranked pro and won, then people would have bitched about me sandbagging.

I`ll accept whatever the tournament director decides, if someone wants to argue with Will into knocking me down to pro then go for it, just leave me out of it. Rankings and points have never meant much to me I just show up to the table and play my hardest, the rest doesn`t really matter.

Author: moyatielens Reply #22 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:08AM

Dave, with all due respect. Eric has earned where he is ranked, along with only a very few others (ie, Mario, Kane...and I wouldn't even put anyone else on the list of who is there..) where US standings are concerned.

You can either take my opinion or leave it, but I've been around and to more tourneys than anyone else in Canada, not to mention played with and against the best in the World time and time again.

Anyone can match up against anyone, but there is no substituting experience over local competition. What I'm saying is, Eric has as much experience in playing the top players as Mario, Kane, myself or anyone else in Canada for that matter. Talent will win you fish ponds, but it is experience which will prevail when put to the ultimate test...not talent alone. You need to learn how to win in order to know how to win.

You have only seen very little when it comes to proving one self. Not to mention having to work your way through Pro status and having a shit seed in order to get to where you wanna be. You have very little clue as to how it all works.

We all have our own pressures and shit to prove. I've been there, done that!!!!

If you wanna talk the talk, man, you gotta walk the freaking walk. Show your ass up there and say what you gotta say on the table, or shut the f up.

Sorry, not to put you down, or anyone else, but you gotta pay respects where respects are due.

That's about all I gotta say to that.

Author: .Garry Reply #23 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:14AM

Over the last 5 years-outside of Eric Dunn consistently showing up and proving his worth, there hasn't been much representation from BC for any of the Alta or Sask tourneys. Not sure who all is coming from Van to put up...or shut up-lol.

I vote all BC players be ranked as PM's then- let them pay more than me with the same payouts...lol.

Just stirring up the pot & I'm offended on behalf of Goodman!

Author: moyatielens Reply #24 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:17AM

Oh and btw..there is no one I would put up to Master in that list other than Mitch (who's not even on it.)

The Pro and Pro Master lists look pretty fair to me.

Author: University of Foos Reply #25 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:19AM

Moya,
I'm pretty sure they're talking about me (Eric Goodman) being ranked a "Canadian Master" not Eric Dunn. Can't really tell from your post though because you don't use any last names/initials.

Author: moyatielens Reply #26 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:29AM

Ah yah, just got that. Wondered when Dave and "Eric" played Adrian and Tom, but just realized it was the last game played in the International event.

teehehe..sorry sorry, Dave.

*hugs*?? mebe I come out on Sunday and I can make it up to you. :p Or mebe you can just buy me a few doubles and we can call it even. :p :p

Author: The Next One. Reply #27 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:41AM

I may just show up just to beat you on the table Garry and then win Open singles.

What day is Open Singles? and will it be finished in a day?

Author: The Next One. Reply #28 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:46AM

Moya Im in Grande Prairie so don't bother showing up on sunday. How is me buying you a few doubles making up for the last posts you've made calling me a punk.

I'm going to try and get someone to cover my shifts, will not be an easy task. If Open singles can finish so i can take a grey hound back the same day, It will increase my chances of going, and taking Burgart out or putting him to the loser's side.

Author: .Garry Reply #29 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:50AM

Bring it!!!!

I believe that you still don't get the format-there is no "open singles". It's a seeded round robin, then a re-seeded tourney based on results of the round robin.

It starts Saturday, with it continuing Sunday to the finals.

BTW I never took a shot at you, only defended the rankings and the center of the universe attitude that seems prevalent in your posts...lol

Author: The Next One. Reply #30 Posted: Sep 25 2009 2:03AM

Btw the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos suck ass!!

Author: .Garry Reply #31 Posted: Sep 25 2009 2:09AM

LOL

My Broncos are 2-0 soon to be 3-0!!!!

Tough rest of the season so we need to bank some wins- crossover against Dallas-Philly-Giants-Wash and inter conference against New England-Indy-Pitt doesn't look promising, but here's hoping.

I do agree with you-can't believe that- that the Chiefs suck! I don't know what ass tastes like though!

(bonk)

You are a punk, so deal. :p And you buying me drinks to make up for it was the funny part. (I wasn't serious, dork.)

*huggies*

Author: Barry Reply #35 Posted: Sep 25 2009 10:33AM

Hey Will, Thanks for all the hard work that you have done in getting this tournament set up. Only a few of us that have been there and done that can relate as to how much effort is required.

Rankings are always a hornets nest, but for this tournament, they really have very little consequence (except for those whose ego's may be a bit bruised). For anyone that has a problem with their ranking... just show up and prove it at the table. I know I intend to be there to prove that I'm no PRO!

Author: domi nate Reply #36 Posted: Sep 25 2009 10:46AM

Will, I'd be a semi-pro at most if I come, right??

Author: Red Pepper Reply #37 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:15PM

Ass tastes great btw. As long as its on a girl.

Peace and Love to all.

Author: foosghost Reply #38 Posted: Sep 25 2009 1:40PM

LOL - well its good to know Moya's got my back.

these rankings are fairly important to have correct, but its more important to be ranked properly, and actually there's less advantage to being under ranked (other than cost of entry).

Because in the RR if you're under ranked (say i'm a PM, but ranked a pro) you'll actually end up having to play a tougher set of opponents than if you were properly ranked.

If i was ranked a PM, there would likely be no other PM in my RR pool, but if i'm ranked a pro, then there's going to be a PM in my RR pool.

my personal opinion, Eric G, has not had the same results or experience as Darrel P, and Matt - but i'd be very happy to not have him in my RR pool. B-)

Author: The Next One. Reply #39 Posted: Sep 25 2009 2:08PM

I've been called a dork, and Tuan, who I have advocating as one of Canada's best for the last year (the only one other than Fred Gower) who has just recently been double dipped by me, has called me stupid.

I'm putting all this in the bank.

What's my rank? What's my rank? I was semi-pro 3 years ago (when I stopped playing) and only played for the first time last month (and only two nights worth of foos at that).

Author: Will Reply #43 Posted: Sep 25 2009 3:45PM

Nathan your a semipro. A few other changes.
Roger penner is pro
Linda ly is semipro
Willie chan is semipro
Kevin wong is a rookie
Andy udel is semipro

jeff quit complaining - it seems like you complain just because you like to complain. There is no reasoning behind it, just random statements. If only makes my job harder.

Thankyou to all the people that are using valid arguements in emails and posts. Again... If you send me a list of results showing why you (or someone else) belong in a different category I will fix it. I don't have every Canadian foosers results memorized... Yet. Let me know but don't just complain randomly please.

Author: Will Reply #44 Posted: Sep 25 2009 5:22PM

Dave- Spree told me yesterday that he can't make it now, I'm not sure which pm's from the states will attend. I would guess Ryan shows up but i don't know for sure

Author: S. Edwards Reply #45 Posted: Sep 25 2009 6:26PM

Will based on your list Nathan Van Melle should not be in SP. I would have put him in Pro. I don't buy the "I haven't played in a while" excuse

Author: Will Reply #46 Posted: Sep 25 2009 6:45PM

Thanks Simon - I'll get a couple more opinions and then rank accordingly

Phewfers..I thought you were serious. Thanks for the clarification. Just a lil fyi..I only call the people I like dorks. :p

And Will,

Stop complaining bout Jeffies complaining. Our board would be as boring as all the others if we didn't have that. :p :p

Author: foosghost Reply #48 Posted: Sep 25 2009 7:26PM

I talked with Spree, Ryan and Billy, and all of them told me they won't be making it (or maybe they just didnt want to play with me?) B-(

Sucks from a promotional stand point, but good for the canucks that do show up, as it means more than likely some Canadian will be bringing home the big bucks!! B-)

Author: Will Reply #49 Posted: Sep 25 2009 9:07PM

Well if it's any consolation none of them wanted to play with me either!

Spree did say his partner backed out as one of the reasons he wasn't coming.

To be honest from a promotional standpoint it is harder now. The most important thing for me is to make this look super professional and have a ton of people around for pictures.
If we can succeed in those ways then the potential sponsors will be happy. All of my discussions with them rely on us having this event as proof that table soccer(Foos) is a growing sport that is attractive to the general public. Having spree or Billy makes the event look more legitimate though. Maybe if a Canadian would just hurry up and win worlds open singles!

Author: S. Edwards Reply #50 Posted: Sep 25 2009 9:36PM

Will , I'm sure if you paid for his flight, hotel and entry fees and food ect. Tony Spreedman would have shown up. If he won Singles and Doubles with you He would be up $2750.00 plus a free trip. Not to bad for a weekend. Your winnings of course would have gone to pay for his trip. Not that bad of an idea if you really wanted to play net for the guy.

Author: supergifted1 Reply #51 Posted: Sep 25 2009 11:39PM

Shinhacker, that was actually funny!!!! "if yer underranked like im ranked pro".

How do you come up with this stuff?

"these rankings are fairly important to have correct, but its more important to be ranked properly, and actually there's less advantage to being under ranked (other than cost of entry)."

Eric, the other advantage of being under ranked is you would be be playing for more money (sort of). 1st in the pro division pays more than 4th in the open division.

Thats the way I read it unless I am missing something

Give me a break jeff I only asked you to complain with reasoning behind it.

I can see that the rankings are a little messed up too, I don't know every foosball players history of every event they have ever played.

I'll say this again... If anyone thinks they are misranked then e-mail me. I have got a lot of emails and worked with all of them. It would probably only take one email listing your results compared to any other pro master ranked players to bump your ranking if you have results to prove it.

I know that calgary doesn't have 5 players better than anyone else in Canada. I know Vancouver/Toronto are obviously cities with a few top end players. I had 8 people, not me at all, rank players between 1 and 10 based on results. Then I averaged it out. The voting had equal representation across Canada. I can see some flaws but I am not going to just start moving players between ranks every time someone posts on a message board.

Send me an email explaining why you or someone else should be bumped. If it makes sense then I will fix it. Am I being unreasonable? Or corrupt? I'm not trying to be. I don't want threads polluted with "everything is stupid" posts because if sheds a negative light on this. I want this to be positive and fair and everything else that you have said you want.

Jeff, You're way out of line.

Will, please don't justify comments like this with a response, they don't deserve it and it's a waste of your time. You've been transparent about how you've made the decisions that you have and if anyone has a problem with it, let them step up and get involved. It's easy to sit on your ass and criticize the people who are doing all the work.

Author: tony Reply #65 Posted: Sep 27 2009 11:22PM

In fact she said the list looked pretty accurate.. if you read closely. There's absolutely nothing disgraceful about any of it, because i don't think either Eric or MOya care.. so why stir the pot?

There's nothing wrong with Alberta foos either - that was just a stupid comment. Granted Will is from AB and he's relatively new to the foos scene but he doesn't deserve your criticism. He's done quite a bit locally and now trying to do more nationally and i dont think you should be on here bashing him or anyone else.

You might think you're a great fooser or whatever but dont come on here bashing someone who's trying hard to make things better personally or otherwise over such stupid things as rankings. If you don't have anything nice to say keep it to yourself, it's not like you're perfect and even if you were WORLD CHAMPION your comments were immature. The one thing about the written word is that you can't take it back. As for comparing us to Imanpoor.. that's another ludicrous comment because i was one of the most vocal against his crap in the west..
