Ok, I have been looking through the points system that we have. I know I have made modifications before, and I understand that having a consistency to the points is important. That said I think I have found a way to improve our points system, but I want to know what everyone else thinks. Currently, when any new player shows up, they start at 900 points. I can adjust that so that every new player that shows up starts at 800 points instead... The lowest that you can go in points is 800. I think it is an improvement because players that only show up one time or two times do not end up with 900 + points, where as players that have come a lot and not won consistantly end up stuck around 800. If new players started at the bottom they would never just start dropping through the ranks, and they would have more incentive to keep coming out to move up. To explain this better I will post one with our current points, and one with the 800 base point modification. Some examples: Christoff has played in 2 or maybe 3 events. Under the current points he has 903 points which puts him at 17th in the list. With the 800 point modification he has 832 and would have moved up each week that he won games. He places about 25th under those. In the current points Albert So has 979 points, and is in the top 10. With the points modification he has 895 and ranks 14th. Karli under our current points has 909, under the modified one she has 810. The top 8 players dont change in any way except for the number of points each player has. Each player in the entire system has less points because there are just less total points to go around. The order is still exactly the same at the top, but the players near the bottom are effected more. Instead of having a new player walk in and have 100 more points than our rookie players, they walk in with the same amount of points. I want to get peoples opinions of what I should do here. Change to the "Modified" version, or stick with the "Current" system. I will take everyones opinion into conisderation and I just want to know if someone can see that I have missed anything? |

I'd like to know why I'm the only one not classified as a pro, non-pro, person who has never posted before or a random lurker. Also, starting everyone at base point is probably for the best, that way if they start coming out regularly and monitor their point totals they dont have to be discouraged about losing so many points, just proud of winning some. Also Also, what's the format for this tuesday? |

I obviously know that you are knowledgable about this game and I have taken into consideration everything you have ever taught me.... I posted that on another thread the same time that I started this one... it is only visable from the Edmonton board though, not through Calgary and Saskfoos. You are not a random lurker... you have posted before... you are not a pro... but you have 910 points so you are not classified as a rookie any more... Will, you have the data for the last 3 Alberta tournaments. Can you calculate points for players from other cities using that? |

I know im a few posts out of the loop here but I think that 800 points should be the starting point for any new player. Also with 800 being the lowest it does not discourage any new players should they not do so well for the first few times they show up to a tuesday night, and the ranking will be as accurate as it can get. Players that are regulars would have more motivation to make it out every tuesday if they want to increase their points. This has all pretty much been said before but just wanted chime in on the subject. Cheers! |

Brian - we are working on coming up with a points system for all of our touraments, and will probably try to incorporate the events other people run too. Without going into to much detail I'll leave it open ended and just say we have been talking about this for a while but haven't finalized anything or put anything into action yet |

I like the modified 800 point base representation. It seems more accurate to recent (6 month)local player participation. My opinions and suggestions below are to improve rating of players and scaling of players in a inviting promotional outlook. I would suggest listing all players that are outside of Edmonton in their own listing or give them more base or less base depending on their preceived rankinig. ie. Eric Goodman, Tuan, Ang etc. should have a base 1000 pts., Ivor D. or Jeff S. 900 before they play an event and NOT drop below that. These guys are ranked/Pt.rated too low. Singles and Doubles play are totally two different scales at the lower levels of Beginner/Rookie. Trying to impliement these players into the Regular established player base with one simple say 3 part 800/900/1000 rating will not work in my opinion, like say Pro/AM's without fair handi-caps. This only really matters when there is going to be some useful promotion for their lower level in singles/doubles/D.Y.P involing these type of New players on a weekly basis. So points given to newer players has to represent whether they have Any skill at all with say a 500/600/700 understood skill grading. They can freefall or advance from their given base with no worries but not lower than their fair skill rated starting point. Then local promotion can openly increase the player base participation with more Pro-Am or D.Y.P.'s WITH handi-caps giving all teams or players winning opportuntities and the new players learning experiences at the same time together in one event. Presently new players randomly drawn in D.Y.P's come in free 1st time, but keeping them coming out they need a fair handi-cap even in their own lower divisions or they most likely will not see their time spent useful. Now as far as ranking players regionally for tournments this will need better payouts/prizes to the 7/8 placing in the Open/Pro events to encourage greater participation to begin with. Some entry fee reduction(s) for out of towners and those outside of greater than 100 miles. Maybe rookies from out of town get greater amount reduced. The latest Calgary Tournment on June 18-20 could do better by just running Open & Rookie as the main events and having a larger payout to 7/8th -- 11/12th or some such level. Making payouts attractive down to these levels. Maybe a Open-Semi only round-robin events city seeded? A - B sided pools?? Rookie events as normal. No matter the ranking and fee levels proper Promotion and advertising is needed a couple of months ahead to get the New people/players thinking in a positive outlook about showing up to local tournys in a substained manner. |
