Topic: The Match off!!

Author: The Next One. Original Message Posted: Jun 17 2010 3:34AM

After toying with Christian Will and Jazzy on the table for a couple hours i suggested we have a bet. I proposed no one outside of vancouver would beat Mitch in a race to 25 games even today. $1000, and it would have to be played in Vancouver. I think both sides would split the challengers airfare as well.

ANY THOUGHTS?

Any takers?

Author: The Next One. Reply #2 Posted: Jun 17 2010 3:37AM

Sorry, forgot to say, NO ONE FROM CANADA would be able to win a race to 25 vs. Mitch.

Author: The Next One. Reply #3 Posted: Jun 17 2010 3:42AM

Snap i messed up again... ok here we go for sure.

Besides someone in Vancouver, No one in all of Canada will beat Mitch in a foosball match race to 25. There.

Author: S. Edwards Reply #4 Posted: Jun 17 2010 11:46AM

So really what you are saying is the only players in Canada that can beat Mitch live in Vancouver. Does that mean no one in Canada can beat the vancouver players that can beat Mitch?

Why then did you say at the Warrior tournament in Edmonton you said Mitch has no three bar on Tornado?

Author: Darcy Reply #5 Posted: Jun 17 2010 12:53PM

Woulda thought you'd stop making silly bets after the whole Desmond thing.

Author: domi nate Reply #6 Posted: Jun 17 2010 1:03PM

What a dumb thread.

Author: Will Reply #7 Posted: Jun 17 2010 1:10PM

Does Victoria count as "not from Vancouver"

Also just to be clear on the bet. Dave Ahn is betting on Mitch, JazzyJeff is betting on "anyone in Canada". So as long as someone accepts the challenge, and jeff thinks that person will win, the bet is on.

There is nothing in it for Mitch or "challenger". The challenger gets a free trip to Vancouver, Mitch just plays. First one to win 25 games wins the money for jeff or Dave.

I would also bet if I have Eric Dunn, Matt Botos, Mario (either), Kane or a few other people too. Anyone in Vancouver care to comment on how good Mitch is?

Author: The Next One. Reply #8 Posted: Jun 17 2010 1:15PM

Yeah Will, Victoria counts as "not from vancouver"

Author: S. Edwards Reply #9 Posted: Jun 17 2010 1:55PM

"There is nothing in it for Mitch or "challenger". The challenger gets a free trip to Vancouver, Mitch just plays. First one to win 25 games wins the money for jeff or Dave."

Define Free:

What about accomidations and meals and transportation to and from the airport. Will Dave and Jeff pick up the tab for that.

I agree with Nathan. This is a dumb thread

Author: Will Reply #10 Posted: Jun 17 2010 2:09PM

Ya I had no clue that a random drunk talk about a bet would turn into a "match off" thread like it is some big deal. I'll bet $20 thatcthis bet never happens...

Author: S. Edwards Reply #11 Posted: Jun 17 2010 2:13PM

"Woulda thought you'd stop making silly bets after the whole Desmond thing"

LOL - that was an excellent response.

Author: Red Pepper Reply #12 Posted: Jun 17 2010 3:26PM

Eric and Mitch never matched up very well, but who knows nowadays. I think Eric would win today, but wouldn't when Mitch was still playing 5 years ago.

Mario and Kane I think would easily win the 25. But they are the top two players in Canada.

Author: The Next One. Reply #13 Posted: Jun 17 2010 3:41PM

It will be cool to see if whoever can beat Mitch straight up to 25. I'm still willing to take this bet. Its a gutsy bet, but a sweet one.

Aside note: Simon, Darcy, or Nearside, I'll playa a $1000 vs you guys any day of the week. If you want to that is.

Author: Darcy Reply #14 Posted: Jun 17 2010 3:43PM

I don't pretend to be good. How about you bet Desmond instead?

Author: S. Edwards Reply #15 Posted: Jun 17 2010 4:09PM

I don't think Dave wants to lose another hotdog.

Author: tony Reply #16 Posted: Jun 17 2010 5:31PM

stupid bet. who wants to play a race to 25? i'd take the field against mitch. and i can think of at least 3 players i'd put my money on. and why does it have to be vancouver. who in their right mind is going to go thru that hassle for $1000.

Author: Sluggo Reply #17 Posted: Jun 17 2010 6:38PM

Red Pepper wrote "Mario and Kane I think would easily win the 25. But they are the top two players in Canada"

Not being from the Great White North, forgive me for sticking my nose in here: But didn't Eric & Gary beat Kane & Mario straight up for like $500 at the Pro Master tour? Did Gary move down to Seattle or something? ....or maybe you all don't count Victoria as Canada up there (that's understandable, I still find it difficult to accept Texas as part of the United States)?

The Next One wrote "Aside note: Simon, Darcy, or Nearside, I'll playa a $1000 vs you guys any day of the week. If you want to that is"

I'm taking the Next One in side bets on this one:
To make it interesting I'm even willing to do a Trifecta bet on this since it looks like Darcy's pulling up lame at the Gate ..lol

Author: Darcy Reply #18 Posted: Jun 17 2010 7:15PM

Yeah, if I were a pro I'd bet on myself against rookies too. Especially ones that have played the game for less than a year.

That being cleared up, I'd still play for money. Just not that kind of money.

Author: Will Reply #19 Posted: Jun 17 2010 7:41PM

Phil, Eric played with Darren in the master tour - I'm not sure of all of the results.

Would you bet the trifecta if I sub in instead of Darcy?

Author: S. Edwards Reply #20 Posted: Jun 17 2010 8:51PM

"I'll playa a $1000 vs you guys any day of the week. If you want to that is."

Let me get this straight. You put up $1000 and we put up $1000. If any one of us beats you we split your $1000 three ways. If you win you get our $1000. Darcy said he is out. Nathan lives up north. How about me, Will and Christian?

Author: The Next One. Reply #21 Posted: Jun 17 2010 8:59PM

lmao

Author: The Next One. Reply #22 Posted: Jun 17 2010 9:33PM

Fine (sigh) one at a time kids. Race to 10

Will, you were too unsure of yourself that you wouldn't even want to play me $50 last night. So now you wanna play? k cause i kinda like you, $500.

Simon, $1000 or if you want $500.

Darcy, if you really want to, $50

BET OR STFU

Author: Will Reply #23 Posted: Jun 17 2010 9:37PM

I kinda like the Trifecta offer lets do that one.

Author: The Next One. Reply #24 Posted: Jun 17 2010 9:54PM

haha f off Will ya chicken

Author: S. Edwards Reply #25 Posted: Jun 17 2010 10:14PM

" k cause i kinda like you". You're such a chump Dave.

Author: The Next One. Reply #26 Posted: Jun 17 2010 10:19PM

Wow, won't bet but will call names.

Author: Will Reply #27 Posted: Jun 17 2010 10:37PM

Ok... I'm starting to see where this is going and I want no part of it. Christian and jeff will also recall Dave telling me that I am cute yesterday. He honestly told me I'm a good looking guy, I thought he was just being nice but.... After seeing "cause I kinda like you" I'm wondering a little more. If you come to calgary I'll play you for $50 there, I didn't want to last night because a. I was drinking way more than you and b. You had just warmed up for an hour and a half and I hadn't touched a table yet.

Hope you don't bail on Calgary, i'll even give you a ride if you can make it to Edmonton from Athabasca.

Author: The Next One. Reply #28 Posted: Jun 17 2010 10:49PM

Will you had 2 beers, I warmed up for an hour? I haven't touched a table in 3 weeks. You know Im not going to Calgary. I don't know what to say really. I think its all too funny.

I'll play you for $50 next time I see you, make sure your wear a nice skirt for me toots

Author: Will Reply #29 Posted: Jun 17 2010 10:57PM

You as good at counting beers as you are at counting time outs.. Anyway it was a fun night last night and I would do it again. &50 next time at a tournament though not just at some bar. Or come to gateway for a dyp and we can do it.

I don't mean do it the way you think, I mean do the bet :)

Author: The Next One. Reply #30 Posted: Jun 17 2010 11:00PM

Oh ya i forgot to mention you dodged another $50 bet you said you would do at your last warrior tournament too a few months back

Author: Will Reply #31 Posted: Jun 17 2010 11:19PM

Ya I should have played you then. Sorry that would have been a good time to bet, right after we beat you in doubles. Next time.

Author: The Next One. Reply #32 Posted: Jun 17 2010 11:39PM

Your partner Ben played very well and so did you. You beat a lot of strong teams that tourny. Mind you none of them ever played on warrior before, and you owned warrior tables for a year?

My first time playing on Warrior kiddo. How did you do in singles?

Author: Will Reply #33 Posted: Jun 18 2010 12:08AM

Ben always plays great. K if were going to argue about credentials let's do that. Last night you whipped out your biggest arguement.. Barely losing to Mickey Munger, meat ball. That is great. I beat him 5-4 5-1 and then the next day 5-2 5-0.

Not so mix of a claim to fame. Also your partner at the warrior tournament won open singles and has played a ton of warrior (more than me). So let's not use partners or tables as an excuse. Let's just play the game and then talk after.

Author: Will Reply #34 Posted: Jun 18 2010 12:23AM

Wow. Long thread considering it started about a bet on other people lol.

Author: domi nate Reply #35 Posted: Jun 18 2010 12:23AM

Just want to apologize to the TSAC for posting this thread on your board. I did not intend for it to contain so much garbage. Just wanted to see how good Mitch Jang still really is.

Author: Sluggo Reply #39 Posted: Jun 18 2010 4:44AM

You're right Will, it was Darrin: My bad, I'm horrible with names!
Darrin's a cool guy, one of the most horrible/ethical I've ever played and a very solid player. I'm not sure I'd put him in the ranks of the top rated players or Best in Canada....Although I could be wrong since Darrin & Eric did match up in the first round of the Master Tour against and beat Mario & Kane (winning one round was worth like $500 - $1,000).

But anyway you slice it Red Pepper's statement of "Mario and Kane are the top two players in Canada" seems to at least be arguable ....Ya think?

Author: Sluggo Reply #40 Posted: Jun 18 2010 6:49AM

Yikes, my spelling sucks!

I meant to put that Darrin is one of the most "Honorable"/Ethical....

F**king spell check, I used a double N and the auto correct option was what was originally posted...

Author: foosghost Reply #41 Posted: Jun 18 2010 1:32PM

LOL - these types of threads are awesome. They bring back some of the spirit to the game in Canada.

Yes it was Darren and I that beat Mario and Kane at the Master Tour - it was 2/3 for $500 - hardly telling as to who's the best. I beat Kane at that tournament in edmonton in Open Singles - Mario beat's me the last 2 times we've played. Kane can beat anyone - Mario as well.

I wouldn't bet on anyone from Canada being able to beat Mitch in a race to 25 games it's too much of a toss up - and my god what a marathon - and that is right up Mitch's alley. He has such good endurance from a focus stand point. I remember playing 8-10 hour money game marathons agaisnt him at starlight till like 7am, and he was as sharp and motivated and focused in the last game as the first, where most normal people would either wear out, or lose focus (like me).

As for my record vs. Mitch, i remember coming up about 50/50 in singles, where he likely had the upper hand in doubles.

From a skill vs skill match up scenario - i'd say Kane, Mario, or myself would match up well agaisnt Mitch now. Mario's stick series would give mitch fits - kane's runner lane would be hard for mitch to read - i do stick series as well now. so hard for mitch to sit on the wall all day and try to read lane like he likes to do.

Mario's 5 bar D would not work well agaisnt mitch, mitch reads too well - Kane's 5 bar D would do well, he's so fast, and mitches passes although well executed are not the fastests things out there.
If Mitch has found a solid 3 bar, then it would be tougher, but that's always been his weak point if one had to name one. and both Mario and Kane throw up good D's - mine comes and goes.

2 bar wise, Mario would do well, Kane too. i do 2-5 now - so likely would do better in the past, as Mitch always won the lose ball game - and by doing a good 2-5 it brings that lose ball game, back to my advantage.

So overall from a skill stand point, i think all 3 of us match up better vs Mitch - but 25 games is where mitch finds his advantage, so that's why to me, it's still a toss up.

Author: spinner Reply #42 Posted: Jun 18 2010 3:23PM

Mitch game is like nobody else in canada. He see holes and can dink ball in from any rod on the table. In singles I don't even think he needs a three bar even to win. His defense is next to none and guaranteed to be best in Canada and even one of best I've ever seen (that's on every rod). Maybe the physical ability is not the best right now but for the mind game, Mitch is the only wizard I have seen on a table in canada. First 10 game be toss up, but for next 15 your be lucky to win one. With a couple week of practice and a race to 25 it wouldn't be even close. Il put another 1000 on match.

Author: Red Pepper Reply #43 Posted: Jun 18 2010 3:40PM

Wow, this thread really got out of control. To respond to sluggo's few comments, I will say that my points are just my opinion who I feel is a better player. I also believe, that just because someone can beat someone else, it doesn't make them better then that person, because everyone plays differently and can match up better or worse to certain styles. Eric and Mario have both beaten Fred in singles, but I don't think either of them are better then he is....

And yes, endurance and his ability to adapt to his opponent very quickly is Mitch's greatest asset. The only other player that I can think of with a similar head game is Tom Spear. Gummy has talked repeatedly at his ability to beat you over the long haul. Mares too.

I agree with Eric's assessment of how everyone matches up.

Anyways, good luck all in Calgary.

Author: hardboiled Reply #44 Posted: Jun 18 2010 7:25PM

If this is what foos talk was a few years back, I don't know how much I would want to be a part of it.

At any rate, as a pool player as well, there are many, many players who are excellent, and make money playing who don't play in tournaments.

I like tournaments because they bring the light of day to any and all arguments. If people come out and support them, great.

Besides, I think playing Mitch would be fun. Last I played Mitch was in 1987, or so.

Hope to see him out sometime.

Nathan,
If you can post on Thursday to tell us you are going to be there, there might be a few more people out. When there is an out of towner, some of us make an effort to get out that night.

I should be able to make it as the boss has a dragon boat race on the weekend and will be preparing for that.

Author: domi nate Reply #53 Posted: Jul 2 2010 9:17PM

IČll drop by for a couple games. I suck though, so Ičll probably watch more than I play.

Author: Aged Whine & Cheese Reply #54 Posted: Jul 3 2010 5:35PM

Yup. Nathan really sucked in that third game against me. What was the final suckage? Nathan 5, me 1. Something like that. Good meeting you Nathan.

Ha ha...

Well I wasn't really trying.
