Last night we did an Open Doubles event, with 8 teams involved and a bunch more people showing up later on for pick up games too. The event went really well and there was a lot of good games to go around. In the first round Mike and Carey took on Darcy and Chris in a match that lasted a while. In the end Carey and Mike took the win and moved on, they ended up playing Ben and I for kingseat. In the kingseat game we played really well but they played a little better. Some timely switching was crucial in the win, and carey shot really well. Mike had his 5 bar going really well too and between them they got the goals at important times. Great playing. Tobin and Chad lost to Ben and I in the first round but fought back through pretty far, beating Sam and Christoff in the match that ended up deciding who took the payout for the highest placing team with a rookie. I had a couple people mention that Tobin's 5 bar was killing them. Ben and I had to play Des and Christian twice, and knocked them out of the A side and the B side. They took third place - but it was nice to see Christian out before the final for once. In the final Ben and I double dipped Mike and Carey, we played really well in the final, Ben passed to my 3 several times and that was one of the most important aspects in our win. Also Ben scored a goal in one of the closer games in the final. Actually I just changed my mind, let's do the hold'em handicapped system. It won't count for points but I think it will be really fun. I'll explain it again at the tournament tomorrow night or you can look at darcy's post again. It is pretty simple, we don't actually need any chips or anything it just works out well as a format for handicapping. Just an open draw with handicaps. |

I can set you aside a challenge table at gateway if you want to come but not play in the draw Simon, that way you can still play against anyone that is there... Of course I am not trying to stop you from playing anywhere else, just giving you an option if you want. |

There's no cards in the hold 'em format, does that mean it's regular foosball too? |

It is just a new form of handicapping that is a little better (in my opinion, with out having tried it yet I'm not sure) The format name is misleading. I'll quickly explain it. Normally the handicap goals are applied at the beginning of each game. In this format the team picks when there goals are applied, although they have to have posession to decide that they are taking one or more of the handicapped goals. You can't take one to win the match, you have to score a real goal for that. I think essentially it helps teams if you have a guy that can't clear the ball, you can just count a goal and the other team serves. The handicaps are also used over an entire match instead of per game. So instead of spotting 2 goals a game it would be 2 goals to be used at any time during the match. Not 6 goals in a best of 3. Darcy maybe you can repost that thread or something, i'm doing this post from my phone. |

This sounds unfair to the handi-caped team, to me. "I think essentially it helps teams if you have a guy that can't clear the ball, you can just count a goal and the other team serves. " Why should the handi-cap team give up the ball? They don't give up serve, when they start with the old system. (taking 1 or 2 points at the start of the match.) If the handi-cap team ( team A )has the ball on there 3-bar & the score is 4-2 for team B, then team A cashes in there 2 chips & now the score is 4-4,I think team A should still be able to have the ball on there 3-bar.:) The big ? here is .Do they have to call a time out to cash in a chip ? Darcy ????? |

It didn't say anywhere that they had to call a time out in order to cash in chips, but that would make sense to me. It would be a bit distracting to be able to call the chips being cashed without having to call a timeout. Further, I like the idea of this format, but I really don't think it would make any difference in terms of play unless we had a few newer players out. As it sits now I don't think anyones going to get any chips as it's a dyp and the regulars are all pretty even on the pro and am sides these days. Maybe we should just play it by ear, if there's alot of rookies out lets use the hold 'em format. If it's like the passed couple of weeks where it was just the regulars, lets just do a pro/am dyp. Thoughts? |

If we do this format and let's say Christian and Garry draw each other and play against Darcy and sam. That would be a 14 to 10 handicap and give Darcy and sam 4 goals to use throughout the match. To be honest I kind of like that idea. In pro/am guys like me and Christian can never draw each other. I have played with a pro partner only probably 3 times ever since we started this league, pretty much always in BYP's although I drew Garry once. I'm not complaining about it but it is fun to have that chance. Also in handicapped draws if even one rookie player shows up it is way more even. If two players like in the scenario above draw each other I think it is a really fair system to do it that way. I don't think it should count as a time out, if you want to use 4 goals at different times in one game you should be able to. I guess the ball could remain where it wad before the goals are counted, I only thought that it would make sense to move the ball because it is standard. I'll talk to some other people before it starts and try to figure out an official rule for this format. |

Good night of foos last night! The more I think about how last night ran the more impressed I am with the format. I know some of the guys had a hard time with spotting goals to other teams, but it really does even up the individual games, and as Christian put it: it places alot more pressure on the team without the handicap at time where you normally wouldn't feel pressure. That can either make you play better or worse.. depending on the player. But, I really liked it. Of course it won't replace the normal dyp's or byp's but it was definitely fun to try something new. Congrats to Christof and Zack for making the final, they used their points at the perfect times against Carey and I. They also both played solid defensively throughout the night from what I saw. Who won the final?? |
